All-around editor.

As I build my client list, I collect new experiences. So far, I've managed and acquired books at a publishing house, studied editing formally, and, of course, edited for a huge variety of clients at the Friendly Red Pen.

Because of this mix of experience, I'm a well-rounded and savvy editor. See my client and project lists for more information.

Copy editor and proofreader
  • I copyedit and proofread for Girl Friday Productions, a mix of literary and women's fiction, romance, and historical fiction.
  • As the current copy editor for Northwest Runner magazine, I work under tight deadlines to turn around 8-12 articles for each issue. I created a style sheet from scratch for the magazine, tailored to its specific needs, and edit each article to match this style while enhancing each individual columnist's and author's voice and clarity.
  • As a proofreader, I specialize in complex works like guidebooks and cookbooks that involve many interlocking pieces such as maps, cue sheets, info blocks, photographs, and captions.
  • I'm the on-call copy editor for Sepehr Egrari Plastic Surgery Center: I work with office documents, patient letters, and website copy, and edit each to match the company's voice.

Developmental and line editor
  • I help authors develop the bones of their projects--whether creative nonfiction, how-to guides, guidebooks, or fiction. I examine plot structure and narrative arc, character development, organization, and cohesion.
  • I bring clarity, smoothness, and rhythm to language while remaining true to the author's voice.

Project management
  • At Mountaineers Books, I managed 4-5 titles per season and thrived in the deadline-driven environment. As a freelancer, I continue to manage titles remotely, which requires discipline and solid time management.
  • I hire freelancers, write back cover and marketing copy, track budgets, proofread text, and make the final calls on corrections. I communicate with authors and freelancers and make sure that my projects stay right on schedule.

Literary agency intern
  • I interned for nine months with a New York-based literary agency. I worked with young adult, middle grade, and children's manuscripts analyzing plot, character, and structure, then crafting editorial letters for clients.

Also specialized.

I'm passionate about every project I take on. But I particularly love:
  • guidebooks (travel and outdoors)
  • light romance and women's fiction
  • young adult, middle grade, and children's
  • cooking and food
  • creative nonfiction

I quickly learn new styles (meaning the guidelines you or your business follows to keep your projects consistent). But I'm especially proficient and experienced with:
  • Chicago Manual of Style 16
  • Associated Press style guide
  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 11
